Family Stories: Parents talk about the stigma of autism
Dealing with the Stigma of Autism
Mental illness still carries a heavy stigma in today's society, which is a burden for both children with autism and their families. Laura, the mother of a child with autism, is organizing after school events for children with disabilities and their families. Both Laura and Dr. Kolevzon agree on the importance of establishing a strong social network for both the children and their parents as well as helping families feel more comfortable in public settings. The support group will provide an opportunity for families to find comfort in others that have shared similar experiences, as well as go on trips without the fear of being ostracized.
